Grants for watershed projects open now
Pierce County is actively promoting environmental sustainability through a new small grants program, which will allocate over $70,000 to support community initiatives aimed at enhancing habitat and water quality in four major watersheds. Grants of up to $2,500 are available for a variety of applicants, including nonprofits, schools, and local governments, fostering a collaborative approach to watershed protection. The program not only encourages local engagement in environmental education but also aims to implement practical projects that safeguard watersheds. Additional funding opportunities may arise through the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, targeting projects that bolster salmon recovery and climate resilience. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to improving ecological health in areas such as the Puyallup-White River and Nisqually watersheds.
Previous projects funded include engaging training programs for the public and ongoing stream cleanup efforts. Applications for these grants are due by April 30, with interested parties directed to the Pierce County website for guidelines and watershed boundaries. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of local involvement in environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.
