Snohomish County Invests 1.5 Million in Digital Equity and Broadband Access
Snohomish County is taking significant steps to enhance digital equity and broadband access by investing $1. 5 million from its federal American Rescue Plan Act allocation. This funding will enable the Sno-Isle Libraries to increase their loanable computer and hotspot inventory by 750 devices and expand their digital navigator program. This program is critical in helping residents access the internet, troubleshoot tech issues, and understand the Affordable Connectivity Program, which offers discounts for eligible households. Current statistics show that 15% of Washington households lack essential computing devices, and the state's enrollment in the ACP is below the national average.
Executive Dave Somers highlighted the dual challenges of infrastructure and access that need to be addressed to effectively bridge the digital divide. County Council Vice Chair Nate Nehring praised the partnership with Sno-Isle Libraries, emphasizing its role in connecting community members to vital resources. Lois Langer Thompson, the executive director of Sno-Isle Libraries, reiterated the importance of internet access for job interviews, telehealth appointments, and online education. The initiative reflects a commitment to leveraging federal recovery funds to promote digital equity and improve overall community connectivity.
