Housing affordability, availability at forefront of revisions to county ADU regulations
Snohomish County's recent updates to Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) regulations, enacted through Ordinance 25-014, significantly broaden the types of properties eligible for ADU construction, now including duplexes and townhouses. Previously limited to single-family homes, the new rules eliminate the requirement for ADUs to match the primary residence's architecture, providing homeowners with greater design flexibility. County Councilwoman Megan Dunn advocates for these changes to expand housing options in response to the county's housing crisis, where a staggering 64. 8% of homes receive accepted offers within 30 days. Dunn's constituents have expressed excitement about the newfound opportunity to build ADUs for aging parents or young adults seeking independence.
Chris Collier, a program manager for the Alliance for Housing Affordability, echoes this sentiment, noting that ADUs can create valuable options for both homeowners and renters. Despite these advancements, Collier warns that the complexities of construction may deter potential builders, posing a hurdle to this new housing solution. Dunn emphasizes the importance of infill development in urban areas to manage growth while preserving open spaces. Overall, the ordinance aims to foster community stability and promote affordable housing solutions.
