Snohomish County Releases Housing Behavioral Health Capital Fund to Create 700 Units New Housing
On September 21, 2023, Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers unveiled a Housing and Behavioral Health Capital Fund, committing $114 million over the next five years to develop 700 new housing units. This initiative is a direct response to the region's escalating housing crisis, where soaring costs have displaced many families and individuals. The funding aims to create 550 units of affordable housing alongside 150 units designated for emergency bridge and permanent supportive housing. Local officials stress that these investments are crucial for ensuring that no household spends more than 30% of their income on housing. The plan also outlines support for vulnerable groups, including those with mental health issues, families, and seniors.
Mark Smith, Executive Director of the Housing Consortium, emphasized the importance of affordable housing in improving community well-being. The initiative will also enhance the availability of behavioral health facilities in the area. Overall, this strategic investment represents a bold step towards fostering a safe and thriving community for all residents.
