Snohomish crosswalk safety campaign reports its findings
The Snohomish Public Safety Board conducted a proactive pedestrian safety campaign from February 1 to 7, aimed at increasing awareness of driver blind spots and the rights of pedestrians. Board members patrolled high-traffic areas in bright outfits, distributing safety pamphlets and receiving positive community feedback. During a board meeting, local business owner Bill Webster II stressed the necessity of such initiatives, especially during the darker parts of the year, to ensure pedestrian safety. The intersection of Third Street and Avenue D was identified as particularly problematic, with board member Sara Wagner noting that drivers often overlook pedestrians. Over the next two years, the city plans to install flashing beacons at five critical intersections to enhance safety, though only one of the board's highlighted intersections will receive a beacon.
Residents expressed relief at the news of safety enhancements, with some admitting to avoiding dangerous crossings altogether. This initiative emphasizes the shared responsibility of drivers and pedestrians in maintaining road safety. Community members are encouraged to remain vigilant and report hazardous intersections to local authorities.
