City of Snohomish rental assistance program keeps vulnerable housed

Snohomish, WALocal News

In Snohomish, a pilot rental assistance program has emerged as a vital resource for struggling families, assisting 17 households with either partial or full rent support during six months in 2024. This initiative is partially funded by a state legislative act enabling cities to claim a portion of state sales tax for affordable housing projects. Velvet Franz, the city’s community navigator, highlighted that the funds were redirected toward rental assistance to address the increasing housing cost burden faced by many residents. To qualify, families must live within the city limits and have incomes below 60% of the Area Median Income. Take the Next Step, a nonprofit family resource center, administers the program, offering additional support such as job search assistance and guidance through medical charity applications.

With nearly 30% of homeowners and 40% of renters in Snohomish experiencing cost burdens, the program aims to keep families in their homes amid rising housing costs. The city anticipates having around $60,000 available for rental assistance in 2025, with the goal of maximizing support for vulnerable residents. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of local initiatives in addressing housing insecurity and enhancing community well-being.
