Snohomish County to unite to honor Rev. Dr. Martin Luther Kings legacy

Snohomish County is set to honor the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a two-day celebration on January 19 and 20, themed “Mission Possible: Working together to achieve the dream. ” The first day will feature a Sunday service at First Presbyterian Church, while the second day includes a march and rally starting at Everett Memorial Stadium.

DanVo’nique Bletson-Reed, president of the Snohomish County Black Heritage Committee, highlights the importance of this event for community reflection and support of King's legacy. Keynote speaker J. J. Frank, an elder and assistant pastor, aims to discuss collaborative solutions to pressing issues like poverty and racism. Wil Johnson, the chief diversity officer for the county, will address the importance of equity and inclusion during his speech and read a county proclamation at the rally.

The celebration also includes a community choir and recognizes youth through the Prodigy for Peace Essay and Art Contest, honoring the first Black Superior Court judge in Snohomish County. These events have been held annually since 1984, marking this celebration as the longest-running in the county. Participants will also engage in service projects, emphasizing community support and care for seniors affected by COVID-19.
