Supply chain delay suspends Wagner Way traffic signal project
The $1. 6 million traffic signal project at the Wollochet Drive-Wagner Way intersection in Gig Harbor has been suspended due to supply chain delays affecting essential components. City Engineer Aaron Hulst indicated that work will likely resume in spring 2025, contingent upon the arrival of backordered traffic signal systems and streetlight poles. Active Construction, the contractor, has made significant progress, including the installation of sidewalks, ADA curb ramps, and crosswalks, but cannot proceed with traffic signal installation until materials arrive. This intersection has a troubling history, with 37 accidents reported since 2018, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced traffic management.
The project is a priority in the city's Transportation Improvement Program, aiming to synchronize traffic signals and improve safety. Additionally, upcoming projects are in the design phase to create right-turn lanes, further addressing congestion issues. Hulst noted that the supply chain challenges are a frustrating reality in post-pandemic construction efforts. These developments highlight the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on infrastructure projects, emphasizing the importance of proactive material procurement.
