Gig Harbor fire station, firefighters get a cameo in this movie with a message
"Sense of Emergency," an independent film featuring Gig Harbor firefighters Lena White and Jake Coverdale, was partially filmed at Station 51 and directed by Madeline Down. The film is inspired by a true story involving Down's mother, who survived a cardiac event during her wedding reception, thanks in part to the quick CPR response from a bystander. Down's goal is to portray the often-overlooked lives of first responders and the psychological toll of their work, particularly regarding PTSD. Actor Luke Barnett, known for roles in "For All Mankind" and "NCIS Los Angeles," plays the paramedic who provided care to Down's mother. With Washington having one of the highest rates of bystander CPR and survival, the film seeks to raise awareness about the importance of citizen intervention.
Division Chief Tom Wescott of Gig Harbor Fire and Medic One believes the film will emphasize how CPR can buy time in emergencies. Additionally, the film aims to shed light on the mental health challenges faced by first responders, as highlighted by Deputy Chief Scott Booth. "Sense of Emergency" is set to be showcased at film festivals after its release next year.
