Mat Classic XXXVI, the highly anticipated state wrestling championship, begins today at the Tacoma Dome, featuring 32 wrestlers from Peninsula and Gig Harbor. The Peninsula girls wrestling team returns almost its entire Class 3A state championship roster from 2024 and is determined to secure back-to-back titles. Under Coach Gary Griffin's leadership, the team excelled at the District III championship, earning a remarkable 291. 5 points and crowning six champions, including defending state champions Mira Sonnen and Bailey Parker. The boys' team also shows promise, with six qualifiers and three alternates, as they aim to make a significant impact in Tacoma.

Nehemiah Grandorff stands out as a contender in the 144-pound category, while Bryce Tillman is noted for his impressive record. Gig Harbor's Ella Nimrick, the district champion at 105 pounds, is another athlete to watch, showcasing a combination of technique and intensity. With strong performances at the district level, both teams are poised for success at the state championship, ready to demonstrate their skills and teamwork on a grand stage.
