Gig Harbor astrophotography students capture stunning images of deep-space nebula

Gig Harbor, WALocal News

Students from Gig Harbor High School, under the guidance of Eric Wolgemuth, have embarked on an independent study in astrophotography, capturing breathtaking images of deep-space nebulae including the North American Nebula and the Crescent Nebula. Using a $7,500 telescope and high-resolution cameras, the team—comprising seniors and a sophomore—spent countless hours in the cold, honing their skills in capturing the beauty of the cosmos. Through the layering of images based on specific wavelengths of light, they revealed the intricate compositions of these celestial objects, reflecting the gases present in the nebulae. Wolgemuth's innovative teaching style, devoid of tests and paperwork, allowed students to delve deeply into the subject matter, fostering both independence and collaboration. The students faced the challenges of astrophotography head-on, often working late into the night, fueled by warm drinks and determination.

Their project highlights the importance of hands-on learning experiences, showcasing the intersection of education and scientific exploration. This initiative not only enhances their understanding of astrophysics but also inspires a future generation of astronomers. The remarkable images they produced serve as a testament to their hard work and dedication.
