PenMet expanding Fox Island sandspit park

Gig Harbor, WALocal News

PenMet Parks has approved the acquisition of two waterfront parcels, significantly expanding the Tacoma DeMolay Sandspit Nature Preserve by 3. 6 acres. The decision, made during a recent meeting, was unanimous and reflects a long-term interest from the property owner, Fox Go Bye Bye, LLC. The project is financially supported by a $2. 25 million grant from Pierce County Conservation Futures, alongside a $511,000 state grant, which will help facilitate the purchase and development.

Additionally, Pierce Conservation District is set to lead a shoreline restoration project, which will remove approximately 600 feet of old concrete bulkhead and restore natural sediment flow, benefiting local ecosystems. This restoration is crucial for enhancing habitats for species like young Chinook salmon and forage fish while improving public access to the beach. The uplands of the newly acquired parcels will be conserved and protected from future development, ensuring long-term preservation of the area. The combination of expanded park space and ecological restoration underscores PenMet’s commitment to balancing community recreation with environmental stewardship. As construction is anticipated to begin in late summer or early fall, the project exemplifies proactive efforts in local conservation and public access.
