Free diapers, insurance, teaching about farming. This Pierce County center helps families.

Gig Harbor, WALocal News

Food Backpacks 4 Kids has assumed responsibility for the Family Resource Center on Key Peninsula, a vital service that ceased operations earlier this year. The nonprofit has a long history of supporting local children through food distribution and is now expanding its mission to provide free diapers, food, and parenting classes. Executive Director Zaida Woodworth emphasized the importance of this initiative for families in the area, where limited resources and transportation options exacerbate their struggles. The center's reopening is supported by a $60,000 grant from the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, helping to bridge the service gap left by the previous center's closure. Food Backpacks 4 Kids will also develop a new facility and a farm to offer agricultural education, aiming to empower local families with essential life skills.

This partnership will not only provide immediate resources but also foster community resilience in the long term. The Key Peninsula is recognized as a "Community of Focus," facing unique challenges in accessing health and support services. Food Backpacks 4 Kids' efforts signify a proactive approach to addressing these needs and improving overall family welfare.
