Stalled retail site plans in Gig Harbor could get new life as mixed use, developer says
Plans for the Village at Harbor Hill in Gig Harbor may see a transformation into a mixed-use development, as noted by Jon Rose, vice president of real estate at Raydient/Rayonier. Initially envisioned as a shopping center with a grocery store, banking, and dining options, the project faced setbacks due to legal disputes over transportation impact fees and the withdrawal of Town & Country Markets from the plans. However, a recent community meeting revealed that approximately 100 residents are advocating for a shift towards a mixed-use model that would integrate residential living alongside retail. Rose highlighted that the community's input has prompted consideration of multifamily housing to create a lively town center atmosphere. Furthermore, he mentioned that there is strong interest from four different grocery chains, which could help reestablish the project’s original retail intentions.
Additionally, Rose is focused on another significant project in Port Gamble, where redevelopment efforts are set to commence in 2025. The evolving plans for the Village at Harbor Hill reflect a growing trend towards accommodating community needs and preferences in urban development. As Gig Harbor navigates these changes, the outcome could significantly shape the local economy and community landscape.
