Stalled retail site plans in Gig Harbor could get new life as mixed use, developer says

Gig Harbor, WALocal News

The future of the Village at Harbor Hill in Gig Harbor is under consideration for mixed-use development, as the original plans for a shopping center have been stalled. Developer Jon Rose of Raydient/Rayonier expressed optimism following a productive community meeting where residents suggested alternatives to upscale grocery stores, emphasizing a desire for options like WinCo and the introduction of multifamily housing. The project was initially set to include a Town & Country Market, but changes in the retail landscape, including the failed Kroger-Albertsons merger, have impacted grocery store dynamics. Rose noted that the primary goal remains landing a grocery tenant, despite declining demand for retail spaces. Encouragingly, he mentioned strong interest from four different grocery chains, which could breathe new life into the project.

Furthermore, Rose is also overseeing a significant redevelopment project in Port Gamble, where plans include residential communities and local businesses while preserving the area’s historic aesthetic. Overall, Gig Harbor’s mixed-use vision reflects community desires for a vibrant town center. The potential revitalization of the Village at Harbor Hill demonstrates responsiveness to local needs and changing market conditions.
