Hurricane Recovery Update Five More Locations Open By Summer
The City of Tampa is progressing in its recovery from the hurricanes that struck last year, with five Parks and Recreation facilities expected to reopen by the end of May. Mayor Jane Castor emphasized the staggering $8. 4 million in damages incurred across city parks and facilities due to the storms, particularly citing the flooding from Hurricane Helene and the winds from Hurricane Milton. The DeSoto Community Center, which reopened on March 3, underwent significant renovations, including the installation of a new HVAC unit that had to be retrofitted due to the building's age. The Kwane Doster Community Center is on track to open its doors to Port Tampa families by the end of March.
Parks and Recreation Director Tony Mulkey expressed sincere gratitude to the community for their understanding and highlighted the dedicated efforts of his staff. The damage from the storms has been unprecedented, affecting various structures and amenities throughout the city. This recovery effort not only restores public spaces but also reflects the resilience of the community in the face of adversity. As facilities gradually reopen, there is a renewed sense of hope for residents eager to enjoy their local parks again.
