New paved pathway coming to Pt. Defiance Park

Tacoma, WALocal News

Point Defiance Park is set to undergo significant improvements with the upcoming construction of a new paved trail, designed to enhance safety and accessibility by separating pedestrians and cyclists from vehicles. This second phase of the Loop Trail will stretch 1. 6 miles, connecting visitors to popular attractions such as the Wilson Way Bridge and the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. The need for improved pedestrian access was identified as a priority during the 2015 update of the Point Defiance Master Plan, reflecting community desires for safer navigation within the park. Construction is expected to begin in May, with a section of Five Mile Drive closed to vehicles for one year.

During this period, detours will be established for pedestrians and cyclists to maintain access to all park destinations. Park Board President Andrea Smith emphasized the commitment to providing multi-modal links to enhance connectivity and safety. The Loop Trail is anticipated to create a barrier-free route, catering to both wheeled users and pedestrians. This project not only addresses current safety needs but also reflects the community's long-standing aspirations for safer access within the beloved urban park.
