Housing in Tacoma gets funding boost
Pierce County Human Services has unveiled over $17 million in funding from the Maureen Howard Affordable Housing Sales Tax to bolster affordable housing initiatives, leading to the creation and preservation of more than 330 housing units. County Executive Ryan Mello highlighted the pressing need for affordable housing, particularly for working families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. The funding will aid first-time homebuyers through organizations like Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity, which will rehabilitate 20 homes for eligible buyers. Mercy Housing Northwest will develop 80 new units near a planned Bus Rapid Transit corridor, with amenities including a no-cost food market and community services. Additionally, the Pierce County Housing Authority will acquire a 56-unit building to maintain long-term affordability and prevent displacement.
Urban Black Community Development will rehabilitate three historic buildings in downtown Tacoma to preserve 78 affordable housing units. Bridge Meadows Tacoma Development plans to create 60 new units, supporting intergenerational living for seniors and families affected by the foster care system. This comprehensive strategy underscores the county's commitment to addressing the urgent need for affordable housing and enhancing community well-being.
