Tacoma City Council Adopts Resolution 41104 to Combat Antisemitism
The Tacoma City Council has taken a significant step in addressing antisemitism by adopting Resolution 41104, which aligns the city's working definition with that of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). This resolution defines antisemitism as a perception of Jews that may manifest as hatred, directed at individuals, their property, or community institutions. Council Member Sarah Rumbaugh, who introduced the resolution, highlighted its importance in fostering a welcoming environment for the Jewish community amid rising antisemitic incidents. The American Jewish Committee (AJC) commended Tacoma's proactive stance, noting the necessity of clearly defining antisemitism to combat it effectively. Mayor Victoria Woodards reiterated the city's commitment to inclusivity and compassion, stating that hatred has no place in Tacoma.
The resolution aligns with a growing trend, as 30 states and the District of Columbia have recognized the IHRA definition to combat antisemitism. Recent statistics from the Anti-Defamation League indicate a concerning rise in antisemitic incidents, with 2021 marking the highest number on record. Tacoma's adoption of this resolution serves as a crucial measure in the ongoing fight against hate and discrimination.
