Pierce County Council Chair and Tacoma Mayor Address Next Steps in Response to ST3 Delay

Tacoma, WALocal News

Following the announcement of a delay in the ST3 light rail project until 2035, Pierce County Council Chair Ryan Mello and Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards articulated their disappointment and frustration. The delay, attributed to Sound Transit’s project planning issues rather than funding, means that Pierce County residents will have to wait longer for essential transportation solutions. Mello plans to work with the Pierce County Council to propose interim measures, which include increasing Sounder Commuter Rail services and expanding express bus routes to connect Pierce and King Counties. The officials are also considering partnerships with Pierce Transit to enhance local transport options. They intend to send a formal letter to Sound Transit to outline their requests.

Both leaders underscored the long-standing tax contributions from Pierce County residents without corresponding immediate benefits. The County Council will address the letter in their March 7 study session, while the City Council will discuss their response on March 14. With many Pierce County workers commuting to neighboring counties, the need for reliable public transportation is more critical than ever.
