Silverdale Rotary Duck race canceled for 2020

Silverdale, WALocal News

The annual Silverdale Rotary Duck Race, a community staple for 27 years, has been canceled for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The race, typically held during Whaling Days in July, draws large crowds eager to watch rubber ducks race for prizes, including a brand-new Nissan truck. In announcing the cancellation, Rotary Club president Christie Scheffer expressed the emotional weight of the decision, emphasizing the race's importance to the community and its role in funding local initiatives. The club will redirect its efforts toward various COVID-19 relief projects, thanks in part to the cooperation of sponsors who are allowing their contributions to be used for these urgent needs. Rotary member Steve Boe mentioned the logistical difficulties of organizing the race amidst health restrictions.

The Rotary plans to set up a 'text-to-donate' number and is committed to supporting local food banks and schools. Although the Duck Race will not take place this year, there is optimism for its return in 2021, as the Rotary Club remains dedicated to its mission of service during these challenging times.
