Whispering Firs Stormwater Park named top project by Storm Water Solutions

Silverdale, WALocal News

Whispering Firs Stormwater Park in Silverdale has been awarded the 'Top Project' title by Storm Water Solutions, recognizing its innovative approach to stormwater management and community integration. Officially opened in June, this 113-acre park was transformed from a neglected trailer park into a multifunctional space that filters and cleans stormwater while providing recreational facilities for residents. With a $4 million investment, the park utilizes advanced green treatment techniques, including bio-retention cells and native plantings, to address critical environmental issues such as total suspended solids and petroleum hydrocarbons. Chris May, senior program manager for the Stormwater Division, emphasized the need for evolving from traditional stormwater projects to more innovative, community-focused designs. Unique amenities like round cement circles serve dual purposes as seating and hydraulic systems.

The park's design enhances local ecology and promotes community wellbeing through walking paths and picnic areas, reflecting Kitsap County's commitment to sustainable development and community engagement. Whispering Firs Stormwater Park, located at 12300 Silverdale Way, is a vital asset for both environmental management and recreational use.
