215 Trees Planted Along Sacramento Northern Parkway in Community-Led Climate Effort
Sacramento's recent climate action event saw the launch of the Equitable Urban Forest project, a multi-year initiative aimed at enhancing urban green spaces in disinvested neighborhoods. Over 400 volunteers, joined by state leaders and city officials, planted 215 trees along the Sacramento Northern Parkway, significantly contributing to the area’s environmental health. This project is partially funded by an Urban and Community Forestry grant from the U. S. Department of Agriculture and aims to improve air quality and foster community pride.
Youth, Parks, & Community Enrichment Director Jackie Beecham highlighted the event's collaborative spirit, which strengthens community ties and promotes environmental stewardship. The initiative also marked Dr. Jane Goodall's 90th birthday, aligning with California Climate Action Corps' goal of planting 90,000 trees statewide. Mayor Darrell Steinberg stressed the importance of expanding Sacramento's tree canopy to combat climate change effectively. The event not only provided a hands-on opportunity for climate action but also educated participants on local sustainability initiatives.
Following the tree planting, attendees enjoyed lunch and a resource fair, further engaging the community in climate action efforts.
