Four steps to avoid a common Thanksgiving disaster

Sacremento, CALocal News

As Thanksgiving approaches, Sacramento's Department of Utilities is actively reminding residents to properly dispose of cooking fats, oils, and grease to avoid sewer clogs and backups. Holiday dishes, particularly turkey and ham, generate significant amounts of these substances, which can lead to severe plumbing issues if poured down the drain. Lisa Moretti, a senior engineer specializing in environmental issues, emphasizes that sewer backups can force families to evacuate their homes during the holidays, a situation best avoided. She outlines four straightforward steps for safe disposal: pouring fats into a disposable container, scraping residue from pots, sealing the container, and disposing of it in the trash. Many believe that running hot water with these materials makes it safe to pour them down the drain, but this only pushes clogs further down the line.

In addition, the department advises residents to utilize city organic waste bins for disposing of both cooked and raw food waste, such as turkey leftovers and vegetable peels. By following these guidelines, Sacramento residents can enjoy a stress-free holiday season while protecting their plumbing systems. Proper waste disposal not only safeguards homes but also contributes to a cleaner, more sustainable community.
