SPDs IMPACT team plays important role in Citys homelessness response
The City of Sacramento's Incident Management Team (IMT) is at the forefront of tackling homelessness through daily deployments of "Rapid Response" units, which combine outreach services and law enforcement. These units, which include outreach workers from the Department of Community Response and IMPACT officers from the Sacramento Police Department, aim to provide essential services while enforcing city ordinances. A notable recent operation led to the arrest of individuals with felony warrants and the seizure of approximately 24 pounds of marijuana and 119 grams of methamphetamine, underscoring the dual focus on safety and service delivery. In another incident, a firearm and ammunition were discovered during an inventory of an encampment, signaling the complexities of the situation. Brian Pedro, the director of the Department of Community Response, emphasized the city's commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents, including vulnerable populations experiencing homelessness.
The IMT collaborates with multiple departments to enhance the effectiveness of their outreach and enforcement actions. This integrated approach not only addresses immediate safety concerns but also frees up police resources for other community needs. The ongoing efforts reflect a comprehensive strategy to manage homelessness while promoting public safety in Sacramento.
