Hundreds Have Weighed in on Tumwaters New Community Center. Heres Whats Been Decided.

Olympia, WALocal News

Tumwater is embarking on a long-awaited project to establish a new community center, responding to the voiced needs of residents over the past two decades. After extensive public engagement, city officials have pinpointed four potential sites, with the airport property being deemed the most suitable location. Feedback from an online survey indicated that key amenities such as an indoor walking track and a dedicated senior space are top priorities for the community. The momentum for this project intensified after the creation of the Metropolitan Park District in 2018, which allowed residents to express their preferences for local funding. Two community workshops have already been conducted to educate the public on national trends in community centers and gather input on local needs.

The anticipated project costs range from $24 million to $60 million, not including land acquisition, and will be financed by the Metropolitan Park District tax. City officials aim to present findings to the City Council soon, with the hope of progressing to the design phase by 2025. Overall, this initiative represents a significant step toward enhancing recreational and social opportunities for all ages in Tumwater.
