Weatherford bravely rescued several family members but returned to the burning home to search for an engagement ring meant for his girlfriend, LaShante Mayo, whom he intended to propose to on New Year’s Eve. Firefighters discovered him unconscious, likely succumbing to smoke inhalation. Known affectionately as 'gummy bear' for his caring nature, Weatherford's girlfriend expressed her heartbreak, stating that she had given up on love until she met him.

The fire department confirmed that the cause of the fire appears to be accidental.
