Seattles Filipino community hosts concert to raise funds to fix vandalized Dr. Jose Rizal Park
The Seattle Filipino community recently rallied together to address the vandalism of Dr. Jose Rizal Park by hosting a benefit concert called "Rizal Rhythms! " The event took place at the Rainier Arts Center and featured esteemed artists, including jazz vocalist Charito, who is based in Tokyo. This initiative was sparked by the theft of four copper plaques from the park, which included a significant time capsule. Community leaders expressed their disappointment over the City of Seattle's failure to follow through on promises to replace the stolen plaques, citing the lack of a budget or timeline for restoration.
Tess Guerzon, an organizer of the event and member of the Rizal Park and Bridge Preservation Society, highlighted the community's urgent need for improvements, such as security measures and repairs to damaged structures. The concert successfully raised funds and demonstrated community solidarity, with plans for additional events to continue the momentum. The Parks and Recreation Department acknowledged the desire to restore the plaques but noted the need for further evaluation of alternative materials. This collaborative effort signifies the community's commitment to preserving their cultural heritage and enhancing public spaces for future generations.
