Town Considers Zoning Changes for Future Mixed-Use Development
La Conner's Town Council is considering zoning changes to facilitate the redevelopment of the former south end industrial zone, presented by consultant Tom Beckwith during a recent meeting. The plan, developed with significant public input and supported by a state planning grant, envisions a mixed-use development that could encompass affordable housing, a festival hall, and walking trails. Some residents, like Linda Talman, argue that the current transitional commercial zoning is adequate and that no changes are necessary. Others, including Debbie Aldrich, voiced concerns over the potential affordability of the new housing, cautioning against unchecked developer influence. Beckwith underscored the area's history of underutilization, pointing out that the site has been largely dormant since the Moore-Clark fish feed plant closed in 1992.
He suggested that acquiring the Triton parcels could lead to broader community benefits. The council took no action during the meeting, as the project aligns with ongoing comprehensive plan updates. Mayor Marna Hanneman emphasized that the planning process is just beginning, indicating a collaborative approach moving forward.
