Survey: Middle Housing in Issaquah
The City of Issaquah is actively engaging its community to discuss the concept of Middle Housing, following the enactment of new state legislation aimed at expanding housing options. In 2023, the Washington State Legislature passed House Bill 1110, requiring cities to incorporate a broader range of housing types in predominantly single-family neighborhoods by June 30, 2025. Alongside this, the city plans to update its regulations in accordance with HB 1337, which permits at least two accessory dwelling units on a single lot. Middle Housing includes a variety of structures such as duplexes, townhouses, and courtyard housing, designed to be compatible with the scale and character of single-family homes, thereby promoting diversity and affordability in housing. The city is soliciting community feedback through a survey, asking residents to identify desirable types of Middle Housing and specific design standards to focus on.
This feedback will guide city planners in aligning new developments with the existing character of neighborhoods. The deadline for survey submissions is September 30, and residents can direct any inquiries regarding Middle Housing to City Planner Valerie Porter. This initiative reflects Issaquah's commitment to adapting to changing housing needs while preserving community aesthetics.
