Community members discuss pros, cons of Regional Fire Authority annexation vote

Edmonds, WALocal News

A significant community discussion took place in Edmonds, drawing around 75 attendees to deliberate on a ballot initiative that proposes the city's annexation into the South County Fire Regional Fire Authority (RFA). The event featured presentations from City Councilmembers Susan Paine and Vivian Olson, who explained the potential benefits of transitioning from a contractor to a full member of the RFA, which would align Edmonds with cities like Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace. Olson pointed out that the city has been paying below the actual costs for fire and emergency services, and that annexation represents the lowest-cost option for future service sustainability. The current contract with South County Fire is set to expire, and the city is facing significant financial challenges, including a recent declaration of a fiscal emergency. Residents currently pay a tax of 72 cents per $1,000 assessed property value, and if the annexation passes, the rates would adjust accordingly.

The discussion also addressed broader budgetary issues, such as the limitations of state law on property tax increases. Olson emphasized the necessity for residents to understand the implications of the ballot measure, which will be voted on April 22. Community engagement in this discussion is crucial for informed decision-making regarding local fire and emergency services.
