DNR Will Deliver 15 Surplus Wildfire Engines To Fire Districts Across State

Chelan, WALocal News

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is delivering 15 surplus wildfire engines to rural fire districts this spring, significantly enhancing their wildfire response capabilities. This initiative is part of DNR's annual effort to support fire services in areas most at risk for wildfires. George Geissler, DNR's State Forester, highlighted the essential role of local fire districts as the first line of defense, capable of quickly addressing ignitions before they escalate. The engines are provided through DNR’s Fire District Assistance Programs, which facilitate access to critical wildfire resources at no cost to the districts. Furthermore, the Federal Excess Property Program complements these efforts by enabling local fire districts to borrow federal firefighting equipment.

DNR customizes these resources to fit local specifications, ensuring they meet specific community needs. Commissioner of Public Lands Dave Upthegrove stressed the importance of collaboration among local, state, and federal agencies in wildfire suppression efforts. This initiative not only strengthens local fire response but also helps mitigate the potential for larger, more severe wildfires that could threaten communities.
