Chelan-Douglas Regional Port Authority's Trades District recognized for innovation in economic development
The Chelan-Douglas Regional Port Authority was recognized for its innovative Trades District Project at the 2025 WEDA Awards held in Olympia, underscoring the significance of local economic development initiatives. This project, which includes 12 incubator spaces ranging from 1,584 to 2,175 square feet, received one of two awards for Innovation in Economic Development, showcasing a novel approach that prioritizes trade-based businesses over large-scale recruitment. Brooke Lammert, the Economic Development Specialist at the Port Authority, described the Trades District as a launching pad for entrepreneurs and a long-term investment in the region's economic vitality. The project's success is attributed to its collaborative nature, partnering with organizations such as the Small Business Development Center and the Hispanic Business Council, ensuring support for historically underserved entrepreneurs. WEDA, Washington's primary trade association for economic development, noted a record number of nominations this year, reflecting the diverse and impactful work being done across the state.
WEDA Board Chair Betty Capestany highlighted the importance of recognizing leaders making strides in job growth and community economic strength. The Trades District Project shared the award with the Clallam Forest Product Innovation Program, illustrating the collaborative spirit among economic developers in Washington. The awards ceremony celebrated achievements across various categories, emphasizing the need for innovative solutions in fostering local economies.
