East Cascade SWAT adds Chelan County Deputy to Crisis Negotiation Team
The East Cascade SWAT unit has recently enhanced its Crisis Negotiation Team by appointing Deputy Zach Brunner from the Chelan County Sheriff's Office. This specialized team, which draws members from four different law enforcement agencies, plays a pivotal role in addressing critical incidents that require skilled negotiation. The selection process for Brunner involved a multifaceted evaluation, including recommendations from supervisors and performance in high-pressure simulation scenarios. With a strong background in de-escalation practices, Brunner has been instrumental in the development of the Behavioral Health Unit (BHU), which aims to provide mental health support rather than incarceration. The BHU, in collaboration with Catholic Charities, has effectively diverted individuals from jail to appropriate mental health resources.
Brunner’s selection underscores the increasing recognition of mental health as a vital component of crisis intervention. As the SWAT team is deployed during the most urgent situations, Brunner's skills will be invaluable. This move reflects a broader trend in law enforcement to prioritize mental health in crisis management.
