New "465" area code to go into effect in New York City in 2026
In a significant development for New York City residents, the New York State Public Service Commission has confirmed that a new area code, "465," will be introduced next year. This area code will cater to the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Marble Hill section, addressing the increasing demand for phone numbers. NYS Public Service Commission Chair Rory M. Christian highlighted that the rise in telephone usage necessitates this move to accommodate the growing population's needs. The "465" area code is projected to last approximately 11 years, ensuring a steady supply of phone numbers for the foreseeable future.
Despite this change, existing customers utilizing the current area codes—347, 718, 917, and 929—will not experience any disruptions or changes to their services. The introduction of this overlay area code reflects the Commission's proactive approach to managing telecommunications in a bustling metropolitan area. As the city continues to grow, maintaining accessible communication channels remains a priority. This initiative underscores the importance of adapting infrastructure to meet evolving demands in one of the world's largest cities.
