Bell tower collapses as fire destroys 100-year-old church in Bushwick
A significant fire devastated The Iglesia Pentecostal Arca Cristiana in Bushwick, Brooklyn, on Wednesday morning, ultimately leading to its total destruction. The incident occurred shortly before 10:45 a. m. , with dramatic footage capturing the intense flames and smoke. Geovany Alvarado, a former parishioner, expressed his sorrow, stating, "I was crying," as he watched a beloved community institution succumb to the fire.
FDNY Chief of Operations Kevin Woods reported that the fire began on the first floor, complicating firefighting efforts as crews had to work from outside the building. The bell tower was engulfed in flames, and both the bell tower and roof collapsed into the structure. Fortunately, the church's pastor was inside during the fire but escaped unharmed, although nearby residents were evacuated for safety. Currently, the cause of the fire is under investigation, and city officials have indicated that the church, which had been a cornerstone of the Bushwick community for over a century, may need to be completely demolished. This tragic event highlights the profound impact on the local community, which is now left to cope with the loss.
