A disturbing incident at James Madison High School in Brooklyn has led to football coach Nicholas Nugent facing both criminal charges and a civil lawsuit for allegedly assaulting a 14-year-old student. According to the victim, who remains anonymous, he was taken into a stairwell by Nugent after falling asleep during a video review session due to recovering from COVID-19. The coach reportedly slammed the student's head against a wall, causing severe injuries that required six staples to close a head wound. The victim's mother, Deslyn Willock, recounted her horror upon discovering her son bleeding and unconscious at school. Nugent was arrested shortly after the incident and is charged with multiple counts of assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
The family has filed a lawsuit against Nugent, the city, and the Department of Education, which has committed to reviewing the case. The teenager has since transferred to a different school and expressed concerns about playing football again, a sport he once loved. This case raises serious questions about student safety and the responsibilities of educators.
