On November 25, 2024, the City of West Hollywood will host a panel discussion titled 'Challenges for LGBTQ+ People in the Former Soviet Union' as part of its Human Rights Speakers Series. The event will take place at the City Council Chambers, starting at 7 p. m. , with doors opening at 6:30 p. m.

This discussion aims to illuminate the significant challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Eastern Europe, particularly in former Soviet countries. Topics will include the plight of asylum seekers, civil rights repression in Russia and Georgia, and emerging opportunities in Armenia amid regional changes. The panel will feature experts from the Los Angeles LGBT Center and the Coalition for Economic Survival, as well as LGBTQ+ Russian-speaking asylum seekers. West Hollywood City Councilmember John Heilman will moderate the event. This initiative underscores the city’s dedication to human rights and its core values of respect and support for all individuals.
