City of West Hollywood Recognizes August 31 as Overdose Awareness Day
The City of West Hollywood is set to recognize August 31, 2024, as Overdose Awareness Day, an event aimed at honoring those lost to drug overdoses and promoting awareness of overdose prevention. To mark the occasion, City Hall and the lanterns over Santa Monica Boulevard will be illuminated in purple, representing the global symbol for overdose awareness. The city has seen a concerning rise in overdose deaths, particularly those linked to fentanyl, which has been found in counterfeit drugs and illicit substances. According to the CDC, overdose deaths reached nearly 110,000 in 2022, emphasizing the urgent need for harm reduction strategies. In response, West Hollywood has initiated programs to distribute fentanyl test strips and Naloxone at community events, including the WeHo Pride Street Fair.
The recently opened Harm Reduction Center, operated by Being Alive, provides essential services such as syringe exchange and risk-reduction counseling. The city’s proactive measures reflect a commitment to addressing the overdose crisis and supporting individuals struggling with substance use disorders. Through community engagement and education, West Hollywood aims to foster a safer environment for its residents.
