Warm Springs hip-hop artist Blue Flamez works to bring positive message to a wider audience
Blue Flamez, also known as Scott Kalama, is a hip-hop artist from the Warm Springs Indian Reservation who is dedicated to sharing a positive message through his music. His sound may initially seem typical of the hip-hop genre, but the depth of his lyrics sets him apart, focusing on Native American pride and the historical and contemporary challenges faced by Indigenous communities. Influenced by legendary West Coast rappers, Kalama's passion for hip-hop began with mixtapes from his brother, which opened his eyes to the power of storytelling in music. Recently, he was awarded the prestigious Fields Artist Fellowship, which will allow him to reach a broader audience and continue his artistic journey. His songs, such as "Rez Life" and "Warrior," reflect his personal experiences and the struggles of his community, emphasizing the importance of resilience and activism.
Kalama works as a certified prevention specialist, mentoring youth and raising awareness about the risks associated with drugs and alcohol. He aims to ignite a "warrior spirit" in listeners, encouraging them to embrace their identities and fight for their rights. Through his artistry, Blue Flamez is not only celebrating his heritage but also inspiring others to do the same.
