Exeter indie bookstore faces uncertain future as owners pass torch to new owners
The Book Garden, an indie bookstore that once held the title of the only establishment selling new books in Tulare County, is currently in escrow, leading to concerns about its future. Longtime owners Chris and Sally Brewer announced their decision to sell after more than 25 years, motivated by their advancing age and health challenges. They initially purchased and renovated an existing flower shop, expanding its offerings to include books, which contributed to its success. The new owners, Becky and Paul Harlien, are eager to take the reins, especially since Becky has harbored dreams of owning a flower shop in her hometown since childhood. The Exeter Flower Company, which shares the building, is also in escrow but seems to have a more promising outlook.
Chris Brewer expressed the bittersweet nature of the transition, emphasizing the emotional connection they have to the store and the community. The sale marks a significant shift for Exeter, where the Book Garden has served as a cultural hub for over two decades. As the community anticipates the new chapter, the Brewers hope for a smooth transition that honors the legacy they built.
