Tumwater residents weigh in on how to fund proposed community center

Tumwater, WALocal News

In a recent survey conducted by the City of Tumwater from December 10-30, 2024, residents expressed their preferences for funding a proposed community center. The survey results show a clear inclination towards a funding model that combines fees and taxes, with over one-third of participants advocating for fees to cover half of the operational costs. Additionally, many respondents indicated they would prefer to pay less than $40 for a monthly membership, while close to one-third would pay less than $7 for daily admission. At a Tumwater City Council meeting, the issue of equitable access was raised, prompting discussions on implementing scholarship programs and making certain areas of the center accessible for free. The city currently levies a property tax of 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value to support recreational projects.

The survey, conducted by Ballard\*King & Associates, saw participation from 741 individuals, with a significant majority being local residents. A summary report detailing the survey findings is available for public viewing. These insights reflect the community's commitment to enhancing local facilities while addressing the need for equitable access.
