Toei Subway adopts a multi-lingual communication panel system for handling spoken customer questions, a Japan-first for subway users
In a significant advancement for public transport accessibility, the Toei Subway has implemented a multi-lingual communication panel system at Tochomae Station, enabling users to convert spoken questions into text and translate them into 12 languages. This system is designed to assist international travelers and those with hearing impairments, marking Japan's first use of such technology at a subway station. The initiative is spearheaded by the Bureau of Transportation of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity as the city prepares for the 2025 World Athletics Championships and Deaflympics. The service operates from the first train until the last and is currently in a trial phase, with a focus on evaluating its effectiveness in real-world scenarios. The VoiceBiz® UCDisplay® system displays translations on a transparent screen, allowing users to engage visually with staff while confirming translation results.
Languages supported include Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean, and several others. If the trial proves successful, the Bureau intends to extend this service to additional subway stations. This innovative approach not only enhances the travel experience for non-Japanese speakers but also fosters a more inclusive environment for all users.
