Revitalization of the Tokyo Expressway (KK Line) Transforming an Urban Highway into a Green Space for Pedestrians

Tokyo, TokyoLocal News

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is set to transform the KK Line of the Tokyo Expressway into an elevated green walkway named the "Tokyo Sky Corridor," spanning two kilometers from Shimbashi to Kyobashi. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to promote walkable urban environments and prioritize pedestrian access in Central Tokyo. Historically significant, the KK Line has served various functions, including a transit way for boats and later as a key road traffic artery. The current redevelopment is a response to the planned underground relocation of the Nihonbashi section of the Shuto Expressway, which has opened up new opportunities for urban revitalization. The project embodies three guiding principles: shifting from car-centric to people-centric design, co-existing harmoniously with nature, and enhancing regional values.

With the creation of a pedestrian network, Tokyo aims to foster a vibrant public space that encourages enjoyment and activity among its citizens and visitors. The GINZA SKY WALK2024 event, scheduled for May 4-6, will allow the public to experience this innovative space firsthand. This transformation reflects Tokyo's commitment to sustainable urban development and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
