Governor's Comments on Lifting the Special Caution Regarding “Nankai Trough Megaquake Advisory”
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has officially lifted the special caution regarding the Nankai Trough Megaquake Advisory as of August 15, 2024. This decision comes in the wake of an earthquake in the Hyuganada Sea, Miyazaki Prefecture, that occurred on August 8, 2024. The Japan Meteorological Agency had issued the advisory, but after a week without unusual seismic phenomena, authorities deemed it safe to lift the warning. Japan's minister of state for disaster management announced that the government would cease its special precautions and urged citizens to maintain their earthquake preparedness. Governor Koike Yuriko highlighted the importance of securing furniture and reviewing evacuation routes and supplies.
Despite the lifting of the advisory, there remains a significant 70 percent chance of a Nankai Trough earthquake occurring within the next three decades. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reassures residents that it will continue to monitor seismic activity and provide updates as necessary. Citizens are reminded to stay vigilant and prepared for potential future earthquakes.
