Hillsborough County Schools has officially transitioned from the testing phase to enforcement for its new school bus camera system, which begins issuing citations on Thursday. This initiative was launched at the start of the school year to curb dangerous driving behaviors around school buses. Over the past month, the system has recorded more than 10,000 warnings, indicating a pressing need for stricter enforcement. Drivers who fail to stop when school bus stop arms are active will now face fines of $225 each time they violate the law. The funds collected from these citations will be utilized to support the ongoing operation and maintenance of the camera system.
This enforcement program seeks not only to penalize offenders but also to enhance the safety of students as they board and disembark from their buses. Hillsborough County Schools is prioritizing student safety and hopes this initiative will lead to a significant reduction in violations. The district's proactive approach addresses a growing concern for the safety of children in school zones.
