Pasco County pumping floodwaters out of hurricane-damaged communities
In Pasco County, Florida, residents of the Hickory Hills area are still dealing with severe flooding months after storms Milton and Helene ravaged the region. To address this issue, county officials have installed pumps in the hardest-hit areas, prioritizing access to public roadways and emergency services. Victor Lemus, a local resident, has expressed his frustration over the slow response and removal of previously deployed pumps, which he feels contributed to the stagnant water levels. Public Works Director Jason Mickel clarified that public funds cannot be used for private property, but additional pumps have been acquired to assist areas impacting public infrastructure. Despite the installation of these pumps, they will only operate Monday through Friday, leaving residents anxious about the upcoming rain forecast.
Lemus and others are concerned that further rain will exacerbate their already challenging situation. As the rainy season approaches, the urgency for a long-term solution has become increasingly evident. Community members continue to advocate for more immediate action to alleviate the flooding crisis.
