Plant City resident hopes for new traffic light on busy road
In Plant City, the Florida Strawberry Festival has intensified traffic congestion at the intersection of Baker Street (U. S. 92) and Whitehurst Road, prompting residents to advocate for the installation of a traffic light. Local resident Michael Hall highlighted the difficulties faced when attempting to turn left onto U. S.
92, particularly during festival weekends when the traffic volume surges. He noted that many residents choose to stay home rather than face the overwhelming congestion. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has committed to conducting a new signal study, as previous assessments in 2020 determined that a traffic light was not warranted. However, with population growth in Plant City and increased drivers using Baker Street as an alternate route during I-4 slowdowns, the need for improved traffic control has become more pressing. Hall emphasized that a traffic light would enhance safety, as the current flashing light is inadequate for managing the high volume of traffic.
The FDOT is expected to complete its analysis by May, which will take community feedback into account. As the intersection continues to be a critical point for local traffic, the outcome of the study could significantly impact safety and accessibility for Plant City residents.
