New Ringling Museum of Art exhibit features flying fish
The Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida, is currently presenting an intriguing exhibition titled "Catch of the Day: Flying Fish from Modern Japan," which will be on display until early April. This exhibit features a diverse array of artistic mediums, including metalwork, glassware, and paintings, all inspired by the captivating theme of flying fish. According to Rhiannon Paget, the museum's Curator of Asian Art, the popularity of flying fish imagery in Japan surged during the 1920s, coinciding with a period of expanded travel and territorial growth. The exhibit showcases standout pieces from artist Ono Bakufu, who employs mica powders to create a shimmering effect that animates the artwork. Paget also highlights the inclusion of Japanese kimonos, which serve as a commentary on the evolution of fast fashion in Japan.
She hopes that the enchanting nature of flying fish will inspire visitors to appreciate art from various cultures worldwide. The exhibition is included with museum admission, making it an accessible opportunity for the local community to engage with artistic expressions rooted in historical context. This exhibition not only enhances the cultural landscape of Sarasota but also encourages ongoing dialogues about art and its diverse representations.
