Fentanyl Dealer Charged With First-Degree Murder

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

Tampa Police apprehended 31-year-old Charles Zumbahlen on charges of first-degree murder following the overdose death of 27-year-old Zachary Reed. The tragic event unfolded on November 25, 2024, when officers responded to a report of a deceased person in Reed's bedroom, where they found narcotics and his cell phone. Investigators quickly linked Zumbahlen to the case, revealing he was the last person seen with Reed before his untimely death. A traffic stop on November 26 led to the discovery of narcotics in Zumbahlen's possession, further implicating him in the case. Both the substances found at the scene and those in Zumbahlen's possession were confirmed to be a tranquilizer and fentanyl, a powerful opioid.

The Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that Reed's death was a direct result of fentanyl intoxication, prompting law enforcement to take action. Chief Lee Bercaw emphasized the Tampa Police Department's commitment to accountability and their zero tolerance for drug-related crimes in the community. Zumbahlen was ultimately arrested on February 13, 2025, facing serious charges for his alleged role in Reed's death.
